Roman Michałowski (b. 1949), Professor at the Department of Medieval History, Faculty of History, University of Warsaw. Professor at the Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
He completed his PhD at the Institute of History of the University of Warsaw (1980) with a thesis on gift-giving and friendship in the Carolingian society. He was Professor at the University of Warsaw (1994 – 2019) and Head of the Department of Medieval History (2004 – 2019) at the Institute of History, University of Warsaw. In 1998 – 2001 he was Professeur Associé of the Paris-Sorbonne University (Paris IV).
Michałowski received the scholarship of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung, Bonn, Federal Republic of Germany (1980-1982), as well as of the Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen, Vienna, Austria (1 I 1985-30 VI 1985).
In 2010 – 2020 he was Editor-in-chief for the history journal “Kwartalnik Historyczny”
His research interests include medieval cult of saints, Christian missions, evangelisation of the pagan peoples, the ideology of royal power, hagiography (with a special emphasis on queens and bishops), the entanglements of religion and politics in early medieval states.
